This early medical book is a compilation of cures for various ailments, including an early mention of the treatment of syphilis with guaiacum. The Spanish became aware of this flowering shrub in the caltrop family when they arrived on San Domingo in the 16th century. Physicians began treating syphilitic patients with a concoction of gum guiacum in this period, and although concentrates derived from the plant have been used to treat sore throat, gout, and coughs, it is not a cure for syphilis.
